The Brief
To support BBC Radio 1’s live broadcasts from some of the UK’s biggest music festivals, The Container Converter designed and built a custom shipping container studio and mobile radio studio using six 20ft ISO shipping containers. Created to place the broadcaster at the heart of the action, the structure provided a highly visible environment for live radio shows, presenter interviews, guest appearances and social media content creation.
The objective was to create a transportable broadcast facility that could travel between multiple events while delivering the professional standards required for live radio production. The result was a bespoke broadcast studio container that combined visibility, functionality and audience engagement within a single touring structure.
Designing a Custom Shipping Container Studio
Built from six ISO shipping containers, this custom shipping container studio was designed to provide BBC Radio 1 with a flexible and scalable broadcasting environment. The modular design allowed the structure to be transported and installed at festivals across the UK while maintaining a consistent brand presence throughout the summer season.
The project demonstrates how a radio container can be transformed into a fully functioning broadcast facility, providing the practical benefits of a shipping container build while delivering the performance expected from a professional radio studio.
The completed structure featured a striking two-storey design that provided BBC Radio 1 with A Two-Storey Mobile Radio Studio for Festivals with both broadcast facilities and highly visible audience-facing spaces.
The upper deck offered an elevated platform for interviews, presenter content, photography and live broadcasting, with festival crowds and main stages creating a dynamic backdrop for content creation. This visibility helped strengthen the connection between the broadcaster, artists and festival audiences.
Inside the upper level, a fully glazed container radio booth enabled presenters and guests to broadcast live while remaining connected to the atmosphere of the event. The glass-fronted studio created an engaging visual experience for festival-goers while maintaining the acoustic performance required for high-quality radio production.
Combining Broadcast Facilities with Fan Engagement
Alongside the broadcast facilities, the structure incorporated dedicated fan engagement areas designed to enhance the visitor experience. At ground level, audiences were able to interact with the brand, meet presenters and talent, and capture memorable photographs throughout the event.
By combining professional broadcasting facilities with audience interaction spaces, the project delivered far more than a traditional studio environment. The structure became a focal point on site, helping BBC Radio 1 create meaningful engagement with festival audiences while supporting live content production.
Touring Across the BBC Radio 1 Festival Programme
As a touring mobile radio studio, the structure travels across BBC Radio 1’s major summer festival programme, supporting broadcasts from some of the UK’s best-known music events.
The flexibility of the design allows BBC Radio 1 to maintain a consistent and recognisable presence at each location while benefiting from the speed, durability and transportability of a custom shipping container studio. The project highlights how broadcast studio containers, mobile radio studios and radio containers can provide an effective solution for media organisations, broadcasters, event organisers and brands requiring flexible touring facilities.
The Result
The completed shipping container studio and mobile radio studio provided BBC Radio 1 with a flexible touring broadcast facility capable of travelling between major UK festivals. Combining professional radio production, fan engagement and strong visual branding within a single transportable structure, the project demonstrates the versatility of a modern broadcast studio container for live events and touring media environments.
